About the society

A Hungarian home
in Cambridge.

The Cambridge University Hungarian Society (CUHS) exists as a social scene and support network for Hungarians affiliated to the University, and promotes higher education in the UK among prospective students in Hungary.

Who we are

CUHS was originally founded in 1957 with the aim of promoting Hungarian cultural heritage at the University. Today, it exists as a social scene and support network for Hungarians affiliated to Cambridge. A further role of CUHS is to advertise higher education in the UK among prospective students in Hungary, supporting applications to the University.

Our events include speaker evenings, social gatherings, and formal dinners with other national societies. We have screened Hungarian films and cooked Hungarian food — enabling the visibility of our culture in Cambridge.

Our history

CUHS has a distinguished history, having been founded by Hungarian students arriving to study at Cambridge following the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Although the Society fell dormant in the ensuing decades, it was re-established in 1994 by students arriving after the fall of the Iron Curtain. With Hungary's accession to the European Union in 2004, studying at the University became an option for more and more students. To promote this option, the Society was refounded in December 2011, as a commitment to mutual support among Hungarian students.

Since then, we have made connections with Hungarian student societies across the UK and joined the Hungarian Youth Association. Our alumni have co-founded the Cambridge-Oxford Alumni Club of Hungary.
